Nigeria is reportedly preparing to seek compensation from South Africa after Nigerian nationals left behind businesses, vehicles, homes and other property while returning to Nigeria amid recent anti-illegal immigration tensions.
In this episode of Daily Updates with Miss Media, we unpack Nigeria’s compensation plans, what Acting High Commissioner Alexander Ajayi has said, why Nigerian returnees are being asked to document their losses, and whether South Africa could face a diplomatic claim.
We also examine ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula’s response to the illegal immigration debate, his defence of the ANC government’s record on border control and deportations, and why he says immigration enforcement must happen through the law — not through intimidation or vigilantism.
The story does not end with Nigeria. Repatriations are continuing, with foreign nationals from several countries reportedly seeking transport home after fears, protests and pressure in communities across South Africa. Reports of Zimbabwean nationals sheltering while waiting for transport have also raised serious questions about safety, documentation, human dignity and the role of government.
Should South Africa compensate foreign nationals who say they abandoned property because they feared for their safety? Should undocumented migrants be repatriated faster? And can South Africa solve its immigration crisis without targeting people who may be legally documented?
